Carmen Riena 2022

Nobody likes getting junk mail or useless bits of paper and card that end up in the recycling bin. Wherever possible, I have tried my hardest to print as little as possible and I send as much as I can electronically to ensure we keep captain planet happy! If I am going to send you something, I want it to be special and something that you may want to keep. At the end of 2021, I commissioned an artist to design a limited edition pair of birthday cards that I hope will be something you will want to keep. This project will be the first of many that will showcase different artists.

I love Carmens work!

They are an artist who caught my eye a while ago with their bright colours and fun filled designs. My brief to them was to create 2 character cards based on my beloved dog and sidekick Micky and our handsome horse Gilbert. I wanted them to have a free hand to create designs that would also showcase their work. I think the results speak for themselves!

Carmen designed the cards to be Risograph printed. This is a technique sometimes described as digital screen printing. Ink is built up in layers to achieve the final design. Many different shades and effects can be achieved by only using a small number of colours. For example, our design only uses 2 colours - Teal and Florescent orange. The ink used is based on sustainable materials such as soy oil or rice bran. The ink is perfect for printing onto uncoated recycled paper which Carmen has taken full advantage of.

The printing was completed at Drucken3000 in Berlin. Not only is Risograph an environmentally friendly printing technique, Drucken3000 power their machines with solar panels on their roof and prefer to use either recycled paper or paper produced using wind power.

Each of the designs have been hand signed and numbered in a strict run of 100 making them even more special, and hopefully something you may want to keep in a frame.
